Wedding Invitation Timeline
When should I send wedding invitations, thank you notes, Save the Dates? This is a question I get often from clients. A great way to be prepared its to start thinking about your invitations as early as possible in your wedding planning process. This could be a year or more in advance. To help you out I’ve created this timeline guide that gives a detailed overview of when to send out wedding invitations.
9-12 MONTHS IN ADVANCE
If you’re having a destination wedding, especially if it’s in an international location, now is the time to order Save the Dates. This will give your guests plenty of time to make travel arrangements.
6 – 8 MONTHS IN ADVANCE
Order destination wedding invitations.
3 – 4 MONTHS IN ADVANCE
Mail invitations for a destination wedding.
7 - 8 MONTHS IN ADVANCE
Order Save the Dates.
Be sure to include location on the Save the Date! You do not have to include the venue, just the date, city and state.
5 – 6 MONTHS IN ADVANCE
Order wedding invitations.
This allows plenty of time for proofing and printing. When you order invitations from Blattpapier Studio, your proofs are ready within 3-7 days. Allow 2-3 weeks for printing, plus up to 3 weeks of shipping, depending where you are ordering from.
6 – 8 WEEKS IN ADVANCE
A word about mailing: We recommend taking one complete suite to your local post office. Have them weigh the full invitation and give you the correct postage amount.
1 - 2 MONTHS IN ADVANCE
Order day-of pieces.
We recommend on placing this order together with your invitation suite, to have them all coordinating. This includes menus, programs, escort cards, and other day-of stationery.
After the Ceremony
Etiquette rules say you have 3 months to write thank you notes, it’s ideal to send them within 3 weeks of receiving the gift. We can make Thank You notes to match your invitation, so order them with your invitations or day-of pieces and you’ll be ready!
KEEP IN MIND
A few things to keep in mind when deciding on your wedding stationery timeline, other than your date:
YOUR STATIONER'S PROCESS
Specially if you are deciding to have custom stationery, beautiful work that properly reflects you as a couple takes time and it is always best to give your stationer enough time to do their job well!
If you have a simple & clean style or if you go for a semi-custom design your suite may not take as long as if your vision is a bit more detailed and may require custom illustrations, calligraphy, or more intricate elements.
If you're looking to create a more custom look with unique printing processes such as: foil stamp or letterpress, give ample time for completion.
TIP: Always make sure to order at least 10 extra invitations, envelopes, programs, menus, etc just in case and to be sure you have some to keep as mementos.
